Frequently Asked Questions
Dust, pollution and daily wear all conspire to cloud the brilliance of a gemstone and dull the surface of platinum and gold. Tiffany & Co. suggests that your ring receive periodic professional maintenance. Our trained staff will check the setting and give your jewellery a thorough cleaning.
Between professional cleanings, Tiffany & Co. recommends the occasional use of our jewellery cleaning kit or a non-abrasive cleaner for diamond jewellery. Jewellery with stones other than diamonds may need other care.

Certain basic precautions should be taken with all of your jewellery. However, some gemstones, as outlined in this section, require special care.
Take care to protect your jewellery from impact against hard surfaces and avoid contact with abrasive surfaces. Even a diamond can chip if hit with enough force or at just the right angle. Many stones such as amethyst, emerald, kunzite, opal, pearl, peridot, tanzanite and tourmaline are very delicate and easily abraded. Enamel can also chip or scratch when struck.
Gemstones can scratch other gemstones and wear away at precious metals. Therefore, avoid stacking those rings and bracelets that would be vulnerable to such abrasion. Extreme temperatures, perfumes, cosmetics, ultrasonic cleaning and household chemicals can also damage jewellery.

Fine cultured pearls with thick nacre layers will last for generations if cared for properly. Cultured pearls should be kept free of perfumes, cosmetics, perspiration and dirt. You may gently wipe cultured pearls with a slightly damp cloth. Tiffany & Co. cultured pearls are strung on pure silk with knots between each cultured pearl. Over time, the silk will stretch, weaken and become soiled. If you wear your cultured pearls regularly, we encourage you to have your cultured pearls cleaned and restrung annually.
If worn often, pearls should be cleaned and restrung professionally once a year. Between cleanings, wipe pearls gently with a damp cloth.

It is important to properly store jewellery when travelling, moving or at home in between uses. Keep jewellery in a storage box away from the elements whenever possible and separated to prevent pieces from becoming tangled or disarranged.
Storing Jewellery at HomeIf your jewellery is used frequently, avoid excessive exposure to air and store it in a tarnish-proof cloth, such as the flannel pouch provided with your Tiffany & Co. piece or a storage box. Good storage boxes are lined with tarnish-proof fabric and have a separate space for each individual piece.
It is important to keep jewellery organised and protected while travelling. When travelling with several pieces, we recommend storing items in a box or bag with separate compartments. This will protect jewellery from becoming tangled or disarranged. Make sure items are away from clothing to prevent snags. Wear or carry any valuable pieces with you in case your luggage is lost.
When moving, keep all items in their permanent storage location. If you are using a jewellery box, wrap and package individual pieces and place back in the box. Once all pieces have been protected and stored, secure your jewellery box with moving materials, like you would with any other piece of furniture.
